# Why Technology Decisions Belong in the Boardroom
For a long time, technology decisions were treated as an IT problem. But things have changed.
Technology now sits underneath almost every part of a business.
It affects how your people work, how you serve customers, how you operate, how quickly you can grow and how competitive you are.
So, the question isn't really whether technology belongs in the boardroom.
It's why it isn't already there?
## Technology isn't just an IT cost anymore
## It's easy to look at technology as another line on the monthly expenses with Microsoft licences, cloud services, systems, and IT support.
## But think more about what the business is getting back from its investment in technology.
## If a manufacturing company spends thousands on software that isn't being used properly, it's wasted investment.
## If employees are spending hours every week manually moving information between systems, it's lost productivity.
## And if critical business data isn't properly protected, it's a business risk.

## Cybersecurity belongs in the boardroom too
## Cybersecurity is another area where technology needs to be treated as a business risk, not just an IT issue.
## What would happen if your systems were unavailable tomorrow?
## Could you access your customer information?
## Could your finance team continue working?
## Could you fulfil orders? How quickly could you recover?
## Your IT team or MSP can help explain the technical risk, but the board needs to understand what that risk means for the business and decide what needs to be done about it.
Your technology strategy should follow your business strategy
If you're planning to double your workforce, your systems need to be able to cope.
If you're opening another location, your infrastructure needs to support it.
If you're trying to reduce costs, technology should be examined for opportunities to remove unnecessary work.
Technology should support where the business is going, not just where it is today.

## Absolutely. Not because technology is more important than sales, finance, operations or people. But because it now touches all of them.
## The businesses that get the most from technology aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest IT budgets.
## They're the ones that understand what they want their technology to achieve and make decisions based on where the business is going next.
## Technology doesn't need its own corner of the business anymore. It needs to be part of the conversation about where the business is going. And that conversation belongs in the boardroom.
